Pull your earphones out from the front jack and make sure the speakers are working. Then it returns to the setup dialog and says “Your hardware is installed and ready for use”.Īt this point, I had my earphones in and was worried because I heard nothing, when I was hearing something from Vista! No worries. Finally, it should say something like “SigmaTel Audio service started” in a new terminal window.

It took quite a bit of time, but the audio drivers installed, you might notice the audio making soft clicking noises as the driver enables and disables the old/new drivers. In Compatibility, select “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” and “Run as administrator”. After downloading the XP version of the driver, right-click the “R171789.exe” file and open the Properties dialog. For my configuration, I had to make sure the driver I picked was compatible with the XPS M1330, so I picked the one from Inspiron E1705 (if you pick the XPS, it ships with Vista, so the driver will not be the XP one).
Go to the Dell website and download the Windows XP (Service Pack 2) driver for SigmaTel Audio (SIGMATEL 92XX C-Major HDA, in my case. I logged out, logged back in with the admin account and it worked…don’t know why, but hey the goal is to make it work, right?! Yes, I tried this with my personal account and ran it as admininstrator, but that didn’t work. Log into Vista using THE administrator account. Therefore, I can no longer stream music to friends easily…would have to now use some sort of audio tap to get the audio out and back in….ugh. People claim that in order to support DRM (playing music only through “allowable” methods), Dell has stopped providing the “Stereo Mix” feature available on SigmaTel Audio cards. Looked at some posts, YouTube videos and such. Right-clicked in the list and checked “Show Disabled Devices”, but there was no “Stereo Mix” anywhere! Help!!
Right-clicked the speaker icon in Vista and picked “Recording Devices”. Wanted to use Stereo Mix (Windows XP users will remember this feature of the audio driver).
